As part of the international research exchange program, “Contact Zones: Far East,” the Zarya Center for Contemporary Art announces the beginning of its second open call for grants for Russian interdisciplinary researchers in Asia, for 2019-2020.

Proposals will be accepted until September 1, 2019.

“Contact Zones: Far East” is organized by Zarya Center of Contemporary Art and the Zarya Foundation for the Development of Contemporary Art supported by BELUGA GROUP. The program is realized in partnership with HOW Art Museum (Shanghai) and Points Center for Contemporary Art (Jinxi).

As part of the program, two participants from Russia will receive residencies in one of the partner institutions in North-East Asia (NEA), where they can realize interdisciplinary and intercultural research projects on the theme of the Russian Far East and the NEA.

“We are grateful to our colleagues and partners from Hong Kong, Shanghai and Jinxi, who are helping us to realize this exchange program,” noted Zarya CCA’s Chief Curator, Alisa Bagdonayte. “We are united by the conviction that collaborative work and mutual trust benefits all the participants involved, and that there should be more professional opportunities, and fewer borders.”

Participation is open to Russian artists and cultural practitioners, including curators, historians, sociologists, geographers, writers, poets, musicians, philologists, and linguists. The program is designed to further encourage the research and self- identification of the Primorye and Far East region with its unique geographical and historical features, the development of cultural exchange, and collaboration between Russia and NEA.

The term “contact zone” was introduced by linguist Mary Louise Pratt in the 1990s to locate the spatial, temporal, geographic, economic, political and bodily interactions between different cultures during historical encounters with one another. Borrowing this understanding as the foundation of the research program, we would like to expand the field of research through studying a wide range of cross-cultural encounters, including the preconceptions, intentions, motivations, compromises, conflicts and accords, as well as the intellectual, emotional and corporal experiences.

APPLICATION GUIDELINES

Field of Study:

Applicants are encouraged to develop research proposals drawing on specific time periods, themes, or phenomena within a wider interdisciplinary inquiry and comparative analysis, dedicated to the history, art and culture of Primorye or the Russian Far East and the country of the hosting institutions.

Research projects can be structured using a variety of different thematic, disciplinary and methodological frameworks.

Selection Criteria:

‣ Artists and researchers, representing various fields of study and specialization, such as curators, historians, sociologists, geographers, writers, poets, musicians, philologists, and linguists.

‣ Motivated by the context, with a focus on history of Vladivostok and the Far East and its connection to the local histories of partner institutions in Asia.

‣ Clearly formulated conceptual framework for the proposed project.

‣ Description of the process for realizing the stated objectives.

‣ Citizen of the Russian Federation.

‣ Working knowledge of English or the language of the country of the hosting institution.

Terms of the Grant:

One research project will be selected for each of the participating partner institutions. Each residency has its own focus.

1. Zarya CCA will cover return airfare to the partner institution, visa fees, and travel insurance (max. 45,000 Russian Rubles).

2. Zarya CCA will award the selected applicants a research grants accordingly:

HOW Art Museum: 1 month, 65,000 Russian Rubles (includes living expenses and the costs of research materials)

Points Center for Contemporary Art: 2 months, 90,000 Russian Rubles (includes living expenses and the costs of research materials).

3. The partner institution will provide accommodation for the residency period.

4. The partner institution will provide the necessary administrative assistance on site, introductions to the local context and connections with local institutions and specialists.

Conditions of Participation:

‣ To give a public presentation in the format of a lecture, seminar, workshop, open studio, or educational course at the hosting institution.

‣ To submit all related documents, original or digital copies of materials collected during the research period and a written report (including possible interviews, a bibliography and photo documentation) to ZARYA CCA and the hosting partner institution within one month of the conclusion of the residency.

‣ To contribute to the publication of the program’s catalogue, Contact Zones: Far East.

Application Requirements:

Applications must be submitted in English and include:

‣ CV

‣ Portfolio showcasing recent projects, exhibitions, publications or extracts from the research papers

‣ Project Proposal, including:

1. A brief description (1,500 words max.) of the intended research and its components (objectives, approach, and background), clearly articulating why it is important to conduct your research in the institution of your choice.

2. Research plan directly tied to the local context.

3. Expected outcome of the research and proposal for the format of the public presentation at the hosting institution.

4. Five images or illustrations related to the proposed research.

(The full proposal should be formatted in a single PDF file, titled in English according to the formula: Hosting Institution_Name.pdf.)

Hosting Institutions

Points Center for Contemporary Art (Jinxi | China)

Participant: Svetlana Shuvaeva (Moscow).

Residency Period: October 16 – December 7, 2019

Found in 2017, the Points Center for Contemporary Art is actively committed to the creation, promotion and preservation of contemporary art. Its main activities lie in its residency program, the creation of an archival database, exhibitions and public educational events.

PCCA is located in the ancient village of Jinxi, whose history dates back over 2,000 years. Jinxi can be found on the outskirts of Suzhou, about an hour’s drive from Shanghai. The characteristic architecture of Jinxi, with its bridges and canals built in ancient times, has remained unchanged for hundreds of years.

This ancient city offers a certain system of civilization with layered social relations. Similar cities in China have faced not only the destruction of material culture, the flight of residents and the loss of traditional crafts, but also the preservation of the traditional way of life and the transformation of its appearance through landscaping.

This residency supports research projects directed at exploring the local context, as well as a more broader inquiry into the transformation of ancient cities.

HOW Art Museum (Shanghai | China)

Residency Period: June, July or August 2020

HOW Art Museum (Shanghai) was founded by Chinese collector Zheng Hao. HOW Art Museum Shanghai has been open to the public since September 2017 The museum organizes exhibitions and educational programs aimed at stimulating critical thinking and fostering open dialogue between contemporary art and society. The main collection of HOW Art Museum includes nearly 400 representative works and texts by Joseph Beuys, representative works of Damien Hirst, Markus Lüpertz, Anish Kapoor, Darren Almond, Yayoi Kusama, Chun Kwang-Young, as well as some significant works of Xu Bing, Zhang Xiaogang, Lin Tianmiao, Zhang Huan, Ai Weiwei, Zhan Wang and other artists.

HOW International Curatorial Residency Program is an international program for curators, scholars and writers, interested in gaining a deeper understanding of contemporary art in China.

В арт-резиденции «Заря» Евгений продолжает работу над современной социальной оперой Russia: Today («Россия: Сегодня»). Идея проекта заключается в том, чтобы люди анонимно рассказывали, что их связывает с Россией, что она для них значит, что они чувствуют по отношению к ней, не взирая на то, что доносится с экранов ТВ.

У жителей Владивостока есть возможность ответить композитору на эти вопросы, специально для посетителей подготовлено место, где можно записать свои мысли, помогая Евгению собрать материал. Из этих ответов будет дословно составлено либретто, а Евгений напишет музыку. Премьера оперы состоится в 2020 году в Хельсинки, Москве, Лондоне, а потом и во Владивостоке. Исполнять произведение будет коллектив из Лондона.

Новые резиденты «Зари» – Анна Симакина и Евгения Фомина. Дуэт занимается музыкальным, танцевальным и сайт-специфичным перформансом.

Анна Симакина закончила училище имени Гнесиных по специальности «руководитель народного хора» и Московскую Школу Кино по специальности «Звукорежиссура кино и телевидения». Участвовала в резиденции молодых хореографов в культурном центре ЗИЛ и училась в «Школе Эстетического Экстремизма» Всеволода Лисовского.

Евгения Фомина закончила градостроительный факультет МГСУ и архитектурный факультет КАМС, училась на вокальном курсе Gogol School под руководством Арины Зверевой и Антона Иванова и у Юлии Бычковой (Центр оперного пения Галины Вишневской), проходила факультативные занятия в школе MusicInside и Voice body Lab. Участница театральной лаборатории Алисы Гребенщиковой и проекта «Постановочный цех», солистка Extravirgin Quartet (участники Открытого музыкального международного конкурса «Московская Весна a cappella»).

Во Владивостоке художницы планируют продолжить свой проект Lake Soundscapes, который совмещает перформанс, импровизацию и исследование акустической среды.

Мы рады приветствовать нашего нового резидента – композитора Евгения Бирмана (Eugene Birman, р. 1987). Евгений Бирман родился в Латвии, с 3-х лет учился в музыкальной школе им. Гнесиных в Москве, продолжил своё образование в США, где закончил Джуллиардскую школу и получил степень доктора философии Оксфордского университета. Также он получил диплом музыкальной академии Киджи в Сиене (Италия). В настоящее время он занимает должность ассистирующего профессора-исследователя в университете Hong Kong Baptist University. Бирман фокусируется на создании масштабных остросоциальных произведений на такие темы, как финансовый кризис 2008 года, договор о российско-эстонской границе и другие.

Евгений Бирман создавал произведения для симфонических оркестров (Лондонский филармонический оркестр, Оркестр Миннесоты), хоров (Симфонический хор Би-Би-Си, Хор Латвийского Радио, Камерный хор Эрика Эриксона), ансамблей и сольных исполнителей (Максим Венгеров, Маурицио Бен Омар).

Его музыку исполняли на четырёх континентах, от Карнеги-холла до Заполярья. Бирман является лауреатом многих премий и грантов, в частности, его проект Russia: Today в 2018 году получил престижную стипендию Гуггенхайма. Подробнее о художнике: http://www.eugenebirman.com

ABOUT ZARYA ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE PROGRAM

ZARYA Artist-in-Residence program based on ZARYA Center for Contemporary Art in Vladivostok is a project aimed at provision of support to professionals in the field of contemporary art that welcomes artists, curators and researchers regardless of their preferred genres and techniques, as well as age and nationality. ZARYA A-i-R offers an opportunity to live and work in the new environment and conditions conductive to intensive work that provide a chance for successful implementation of creativity projects.

ZARYA A-i-R program is primarily focused on analysis and development of local environment. One of its tasks is establishment of a dialogue with both dedicated professionals and wide audience. ZARYA A-i-R program is destined to become an efficient point of interaction between representatives of various nations and cultures and to encourage development of the local art world on the Far East. Throughout the existence of the Residency, which was opened in December 2014, more than 80 artists from Russia and overseas have become its participants.

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE

- artists, curators and researchers (individual or teams) not younger than 18 years working with painting, sculpture, graphics, photo and video, installation, performance, choreography, theater, music and street art.

CONDITIONS

Residence duration – 1 or 2 months (optional).

Resident is to be provided with:

- accommodation in a furnished studio apartment (2 studios for 2 residents in each, kitchen + living room, household appliances) at the premises of ZARYA CCA;
- a workshop (33 m2) at the premises of ZARYA CCA for joint use;
- PR support of the developing project;
- assistance in coordination of the developing project (introduction to the local context, meetings arrangement, information and literature search assistance);
- official invitation letter for visa.

Resident is expected to:

- develop and present the project within the program timeline;
- provide an introduction lecture;
- provide an additional event in another format (master-class, seminar, off-site lecture, open studio day, training course, etc.);
- submit final artworks for ZARYA CCA collection (the number of artworks and other details are to be negotiated individually).

SELECTION CRITERIA

Priority is to be given to the projects that meet the following requirements:

- site-specific focus on local context of the Far East and Vladivostok;
- strong conceptual framework of the project;
- proper understanding of the project development process.

ZARYA CCA acts on a competitive basis and considers all applications submitted until August 11th, 2019 (applications receipt closing – 18:00 Vladivostok time, UTC+10).

Q: What are the criteria of selection of artworks to be left by artists for ZARYA CCA collection?

A: Selection is conducted by an expert committee. The Residence reserves the right to select the particular final artworks for collection.

Q: Is it possible to bring family members to the Residence?

A: Details are negotiated in each individual case. We can also give recommendations on search of rental apartments in Vladivostok.

Q: Is it obligatory to hold an exhibition upon the residency completion?

A: The form of residency report is not limited to only exhibition project. Possible options are to be discussed at the site and may be subject to change as the case may be.

Представляем нашего первого в этом году резидента – фотографа Людмилу Кецлах из Соединенных Штатов Америки. Она окончила магистратуру Белорусского политехнического института по специальности «Термодинамика».Фотографией стала заниматься в 2001 году, в настоящее время получает профильное образование в Washtenaw Community College (Энн-Арбор, штат Мичиган, США).

В течение последних одиннадцати лет посещала многочисленные фотосеминары и воркшопы, имея возможность учиться у выдающихся фотографов, изменивших взгляд на её мир: Сэма Абеля, Антонина Кратохвиля, Юджина Ричардса, Алекса Майоли, Андреа Модики, Мигеля Гандерта и Пола Элледжа.

Является участником многих выставок в городах США (Нью-Йорк, Детройт, Чикаго) и мира. В 2017 году получила международную премию Kassel Dummy Book Award за книгу «Неопределенность бытия», позднее представленную на фотофорумах в Стамбуле, Москве, Риме, Мадриде, Дублине, Загребе и других городах мира.

Во время своего пребывания во Владивостоке Людмила планирует продолжить начатую в Карелии работу над историческими хрониками ГУЛАГа, путешествуя по местам бывших исправительно-трудовых лагерей и трудовых поселений 30-60 гг. и фотографируя остатки прошлого.

В это воскресенье, 26 мая, в 17:00 состоится приветственная лекция резидента «Люди моего мира». «Я думаю о себе как об исследователе, открывающем жизнь, который пытается записать и понять суть человеческого характера. Я – фотограф-документалист, решающий социальные проблемы, которые меня беспокоят. Во время лекции я поделюсь историями людей, которых встретила, расскажу о разных культурах и сосредоточу внимание на социальных вопросах», – комментирует художница предстоящее событие.

Резиденция состоится в рамках инициированной HIAP программы коллегиального и кураторского сотрудничества Connecting Points.

Условия участия:

Программа Connecting Points нацелена на укрепление коллегиального и кураторского взаимодействия в поле искусства и культуры между Финляндией и Россией.

Программа исследует специфические аспекты различных территорий, а также взаимосвязи и взаимопонимание между ними. Местность может определять основной фокус работы, быть темой для высказывания, а также быть предпосылкой для интенсивных временных и глубоких и длительных внешних связей. В настоящее время руководителями программы являются художники и кураторы Миина Гуйала и Артту Меримаа. Они также курируют деятельность галереи-витрины «Алкови» в Хельсинки.

HIAP (Helsinki International Artist Programme) – международная хельсинкская художественная резиденция, созданная в 1998 году. HIAP предоставляет возможность местным и иностранным художникам и кураторам заниматься экспериментальными междисциплинарными проектами, проводить исследования, участвуя в диалоге с местной арт-сценой.

Единственная на Дальнем Востоке арт-резиденция «Заря» существует со второй половины 2014 года на базе Центра современного искусства «Заря» и поддерживает профессионалов в области современного искусства из России и мира. Резиденция дает возможность художникам и коллективам реализовывать собственные проекты во Владивостоке, ориентируясь на региональный культурный и природный контекст и взаимодействуя с локальным арт-сообществом. За время существования резиденции её участниками стали более 80 российских и иностранных художников.

Центр современного искусства «Заря» был открыт во Владивостоке в 2013 году по инициативе российского предпринимателя, мецената, основателя крупнейшей российской алкогольной компании BELUGA GROUP Александра Мечетина. ЦСИ располагается на территории творческого кластера «Заря» в помещениях бывшей одноименной швейной фабрики. Главной задачей Центра является представление в Приморье лучших достижений современной культуры России и мира, поддержка художников и местного художественного сообщества.
